Every two years, the members of the International Peace Research Association meet at their global conference to (a) asses conflict and peace building in the world, (b) discuss the state of the art of peace research, (c) to plan future research, and (d) influence the practice and decision-making of violence prevention and peace building.

The last conference, ‘Patterns of Conflict, Paths to Peace,’ held in Calgary, Canada, was attended by nearly 400 participants from 59 countries. They participated in 130 specialized panel sessions, organized by the IPRA Commissions and Working Groups, and six cutting edge plenary sessions focused on: peace journalism, the meaning of professionalism in peace building, peace building architecture, security with a human face, regional developments in peace research and Canadian First Nations on peace. The conference was generously supported by the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), the International Development Research Centre (IDRC), the Belgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the IPRA Foundation.

Scholars can participate in the program in different ways: by presenting a paper, by chairing a panel or roundtable, being selected as a discussant, or by making comments on a presentation.

The aim of the conference is to encourage the presentation and active discussion of theories and research findings and exploring topics of interest from a wide range of disciplinary and theoretical perspectives in the form of panels and roundtables.
